Canvas

Canvas is the main learning management system for the University of Oklahoma campus. Canvas offers instructors an opportunity to re-evaluate their courses, incorporating best practices in teaching. Faculty will love its straightforward, simple architecture that makes content the focus. It is easy to navigate, allowing them to build courses clearly and consistently. New tools like SpeedGrader make grading assignments a breeze, enabling instructors to give students more thorough and efficient feedback.

Students will enjoy taking Canvas on the go with the mobile app. They can know where they stand in a course by including hypothetical grades throughout the term. Canvas makes collaboration easy, enabling students to share documents and host discussions all within the LMS. The calendar tool will help students stay organized by displaying assignments and due dates across all active courses.

Cost

OU IT provides this service for FREE to all Norman, OKC, and Tulsa campus faculty, staff, and students.

Availability

Canvas can be accessed via https://canvas.ou.edu. Canvas course sites are available for every course in the OU catalog. Course access is initially restricted to Instructors of Record and enrolled students. OU faculty, staff and students also have the ability to create non-course shells in Canvas, such as for faculty search groups, department committees and student organizations.

Features

Announcements

Announcements can be useful when due dates change, as a reminder of approaching deadlines, or simply to welcome students to the course! Professors can include links, videos, and images relevant to the course or post internship opportunities for students.

Modules

Modules are used to organize course content by weeks, units, or a different organizational structure that works for your course. With modules, you are essentially creating a one-directional linear flow of what you would like your students to do. Each module can contain files, discussions, assignments, quizzes, and other learning materials that you would like to use.

Grades

OU Canvas supports the following grading systems: percentage, complete/incomplete/, letter grade, GPA and non-graded. Columns are automatically created in the Gradebook when you create and publish assignments, graded discussions, and graded quizzes and surveys. A column is also automatically added for the Attendance tool.

SpeedGrader

SpeedGrader allows you to view and grade student assignment submissions in one place using a simple point scale or complex rubric. Canvas accepts a variety of document formats and even URLs as assignment submissions.

Quizzes

The quiz tool is used to create and administer online quizzes and surveys. You can also use quizzes to conduct and moderate exams and assessments, both graded and ungraded.
