How to locate your Computer Name and Serial Number using KeyAccess [aka Sassafras]

The Sassafras (KeyAccess) client is used to monitor encryption and security status for OU owned computers and OU HSC student machines requiring encryption. If you are required to register your device's encryption status with OU, you may locate this information using the Sassafras client available for download through our "Install the Sassafras/KeyAccess IT Asset Management agent" article.

After gathering your Serial Number, please complete Student Encryption Certification Form

Windows

  1. To begin, insure you have installed Sassafras (KeyAccess) from the link above.
  2. Now on your Home screen, click into your "Type here to search" on your taskbar. Alternately the search field may not appear until you click your Windows Start button.
  3. In your search field, type in "keyaccess" (no quotes)
  4. Select the Keyaccess app and it should now open. The "Host Name" will be your Computer Name. Your Serial Number will also be displayed. KeyAccess window with example device information

MacOS

  1. To begin, insure you have installed Sassafras (KeyAccess) from the link above.
  2. On your menu bar, click the Spotlight magnifying glass to Search.
  3. Type in "keyaccess" (no quotes) and then hit enter.
    • Note the search may autocomplete to keyacesspref.prefpane
  4. Your computer Keyaccess should open. The "Host Name" will be your Computer Name. Your Serial Number will also be displayed. KeyAccess window with example device information
