Canvas Accessibility Checker Tool

What is it?

The Accessibility Checker button that shows a model of a person inside a circle.

As shown in the button above, the Accessibility Checker is a Canvas tool that detects and verifies up to 12 common accessibility errors found in the rich content editor located in the edit page of pages, assignments, discussions, announcements, and quizzes. Common errors include issues like image alt text, text color contrasts, table headers, and more. Checking for accessibility promotes equitable access, lowers reader frustration, and helps comply with the the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA or Title II).

 

How to Use the Accessibility Checker?

  1. In a Canvas course, create or edit an announcement, assignment, discussion, quiz, or page by clicking on the create or edit button respectively. The image below is an example of editing a Canvas page in the Pages section.

  1. Click the Accessibility Checker button under the right-side of the Rich Content Editor.

  1. On the right-side slideout menu titled "Accessibility Checker", carefully read then address issue within the menu.

  1. After you address the accessibility issue, click the "Apply" button on the bottom-right corner of the "Accessibility Checker" slideout menu to save changes and automatically move to the next issue.
