If your Windows Enterprise or Education for your university owned computer reports that it is not genuine, your machine may be having trouble reaching the license activation server.
First, check that your computer is connected and added to the sooner domain. While it is not required that it be on the domain, it does help the machine reach the needed server. To check, right click on Computer and select Properties. Under domain, it should state sooner.net.ou.edu. If it does not, please speak with your IT representative for your department, so that they may add it to the domain.
Automatic activation of Windows 10 Education through the OU license server requires that DNS be configured correctly for wherever your machine is located. If one is off campus, not on the domain or on campus but unable to reach the license server, one can force Windows Enterprise to look at the OU license server.
To begin, if you are off campus, please connect to GlobalProtect VPN. If you are on campus, you will not need to use VPN, you will just need to be connected to the OU network.
Windows 10 License Update
If you need to re-license your OU licensed copy of Windows or if you are beginning to receive an alert prompt that your “Windows activation will expire soon”, then you may need to renew your license. Please see the following instructions for information on how to renew you license.
Begin by finding Command Prompt (type cmd into your Window Search field) then open it as Administrator (right-click the Command Prompt shortcut and choose “Run As Administrator” if UAC is turned on), and then type in the following command and hit enter:
slmgr /skms s2-mslicensing.net.ou.edu
Now type in:
slmgr /ato
One can also find out the current activation status by entering:
C:\Windows\System32\cscript slmgr.vbs -dli
Troubleshooting
If you receive a notification that the system had been rearmed too many times, your reactivation may not process. In these circumstances, there is an additional command to try to run. Open Command Prompt (type cmd into your Window Search field) then open it as Administrator (right-click the Command Prompt shortcut and choose “Run As Administrator” if UAC is turned on), and then type in the following command and hit enter:
slui.exe
This will open the Windows Activation Service and take you to a Microsoft webpage to install an add-on authenticator in Internet Explorer. This add-on will re-verify the Enterprise key and set the status to “activated.”
