As of Java 7 update 51 and Java 8 update 20 the only security levels available are “High” and “Very High.” This causes conflicts with certain OU websites that do not conform to the “High” security standard.
Known problem areas include:
- INB Banner
- Automated Building Systems (ABS) for facilities management
Currently only Java for Internet Explorer for Windows is still supported.

Step 1: Make sure your copy Internet Explorer is up to date. Internet Explorer is kept updated through Windows Update.
Step 2: Make sure you have an updated copy of Java by going to java.com.

Step 3: You will then need to approve the affected website in Java’s security settings.

- Open Control Panel.
- Open the Java applet (or if you are viewing by category, choose Programs, then Java).
- Go to the Security Tab and click “Edit Site List…”
- Click “Add”.
- Type the address for the site having the issue (ex. for INB issues enter https://inb.ou.edu) and click “OK”.
- If you see the site in your exception site list you can then click OK to save your preferences. Run Java as normal, allowing the prompted items as the appear.
