What is BitLocker

BitLocker is a Windows security feature that provides encryption for entire volumes, addressing the threats of data theft or exposure from lost, stolen, or inappropriately decommissioned devices. BitLocker for Windows and FileVault for MacOS devices are used for device encryption on OU owned computers. In addition, they are utilized as part of HSC's data protection policy for personal devices being used for HSC campus work.

Securing or recovering your key

Personal Device

Note that OU IT can not help with recovering your BitLocker recovery key on a personal device. If the key has been lost, the only way to continue using the device is to wipe the hard drive, which results in a complete loss of your existing data.

OU Owned Device

If you need your recovery key for your OU owned device, please take a photo of the blue Windows screen prompting for your key. Then attach that photo to a College and Department Device Support ticket.
