HSC Student Windows Device Requirements

Medical Residents: The OUHSC Student Device Encryption program does not apply to medical residents. Medical residents that are not provided with a university or OU Health device should contact the Office of Compliance with usage questions.

The University of Oklahoma requires students to utilize Windows Education, Professional, or Enterprise. Windows Home is not allowed. To determine if your Operating System complies with University policy and can be encrypted please review the steps below to determine if you are using Windows Home.

If you are using Windows Home, please view Student Windows 10/11 Home to Windows 10/11 Education Upgrade to upgrade your OS for FREE. Please note, this free license upgrade doesn’t include OS updates.  If you use your free license to upgrade a Windows 10 installation, and at a later date choose to update to Windows 11, you will need to purchase a Windows 11 Pro license on your own.  Consider updating to Windows 11 before using your one free license upgrade.

If you are already using Windows Education, Professional, or Enterprise please view Turn on BitLocker Encryption - Windows 10/11 Professional and 10/11 Education to encrypt your device.

If you need to determine what version of Windows you are running, you may do so by following these steps:

  1. To begin, click on the Windows Start button on your taskbar.
  2. Click the Settings option (shown by a gear icon)
  3. In the upper left corner, click System.
  4. On the left menu list, click on About, it should be near the bottom.
  5. Under Windows specifications, the Edition should be listed. The processor type, if needed, will be listed on the "System type" line. Windows About screen
