What is Cognos?

Cognos is a web-based business intelligence tool that transforms per-student Banner data into meaningful and useful information. It enables users to analyze large amounts of data in various ways to identify opportunities and address challenges.

Why would I need Cognos access?

If you require information beyond a single-student view, Cognos provides access to aggregate data, including lists and summary tables. This allows for a broader analysis and better decision-making.

What skills are required to use Cognos?

The skills needed depend on how you intend to use Cognos. Different licenses require varying levels of technical and data proficiency:

• Consumer License: Allows users to run pre-developed reports. These reports are often parameter-driven, enabling you to select specific information (e.g., college and academic term) relevant to your area. Basic knowledge of Excel is sufficient.
• Author License: Allows users to create complex reports to obtain very specific information. This requires more advanced skills, such as creating joins, building complex filters, and writing SQL.
