External email banners are being included in emails from external senders to help users spot potential phishing or spoofing attempts. These banners are a reminder to be cautious, especially with links or attachments. Internal emails won’t have banners, but not all bannered emails are dangerous. This is part of a broader effort to improve email security for everyone.
Emails sent from outside the organization are marked with an “External Email” banner for security. For more information, visit the External email banner article.
If you believe the communications your area is sending are internal and should not be marked as External Email, you can request a banner exemption. After implementation on May 19, 2025, sending a test email to yourself from the system in question is the quickest way to determine if emails are being marked as external. Exemption approval involves multiple groups on campus, please be patient as requests are reviewed. You will be contacted if additional information or rationale is needed.
Examples of when to request:
- The address is external, such as third-party apps (e.g., a cloud tool or system), but is used internally for communications
- The sender is part of a company-owned or managed service
- The email supports internal communication or operations
