Brightspace by D2L

Brightspace by D2L is the main learning management system for the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and Tulsa HSC campuses.

Brightspace provides instructors with the ability to distribute course information, accept digital assignments, communicate, assess online, and provide feedback to students.  Students gain access to Brightspace courses by official Peoplesoft enrollment.  Courses in Brightspace are automatically added from official PeopleSoft records including primary instructor. Staff and Course Managers may request to be added by submitting a request.

Availability

Brightspace by D2L can be accessed via https://learn.ouhsc.edu.  Brightspace course sites are available for all active courses entered into PeopleSoft.  Brightspace courses are limited in access to enrolled HSC students and assigned faculty/course administrators. Community courses can be requested for non-class related activities such as a "Class of.. " or research group.

Features

Announcements

Announcements can be useful when due dates change, as a reminder of approaching deadlines, or simply to welcome students to the course and communicate throughout the semester. Faculty can include links, videos, and images relevant to the course.

 

Accessibility

Built-in accessibility checker for content, quizzing, and discussions.

 

Content

Content can be organized into modules with topics being uploaded files, internally created posts, links, and video.  With content faculty can automatically release content with release conditions based on actions the student takes. Faculty can also view reports to see how the students are engaging with the posted content.

 

Assignments & Assessments

Students use the Assignments tool to upload and submit assignments directly to the site, eliminating the need to mail, fax, or email their work to instructors. On paper submissions and observed in person assignments are also available and do not require file submissions to be made.

The Quizzes tool enables you to create and manage points-measured assessments. As part of your quantifiable assessment procedures, you can use quizzes to help evaluate users' learning progress and learning outcomes. 

 

Rubrics

Rubrics are used to evaluate an activity or item based on a predefined set of criteria. They help ensure that activities and items are evaluated fairly and consistently. Faculty can create Rubrics for assignments, discussions, and surveys.

 

Inline Grading

The inline grading tool allows you to view and grade student assignment submissions and discussions in one place using a simple point scale or complex rubric. Brightspace accepts a variety of document formats and even URLs as assignment submissions.

 

Discussions

The Discussions tool is a collaboration area to post, read and reply to threads on different topics, share thoughts about course materials, ask questions, share files, or can simply allow students to work with peers on assignments and homework.

 

Class Progress

The Class Progress tool tracks your learners' overall progress as a course and individually.

Students also can view their own progress as well.

 

Pulse App for Students

Brightspace Pulse is a mobile app for students that can help you stay connected and on track with your Brightspace courses. It gives you one easy view of course calendars, readings, assignments, evaluations, grades, and news. The app will help you to make better decisions about how to handle your workload, when to submit assignments, and when to prepare for tests. Real-time alerts will let you know when classes are cancelled, rooms are moved, or new grades are available. The schedule view and weekly visualization enables you to quickly at a glance view what is due today, this week and upcoming across all your courses. Available in the Google Play and iOS App Store.

 

Student Success System

Brightspace Student Success System is a tool that helps to drive learner retention by using predictive analytics and machine learning techniques to give instructors advanced knowledge of both learners who are struggling and those who may need additional challenges to keep them engaged. It can make predictions about the final grade for each student uses supporting visualizations and dashboards to identify learners who may need more from their instructors. Courses must be requested to have this tool turned on.

 

Insights Portal

Four dashboards include easy-to-use reporting visualizations that provide a more complete picture of student engagement within Brightspace. This tool offers staff and faculty the ability to track, measure, and monitor student progress as well as analyze quiz results more deeply.
