Public vs private pages for SharePoint in Microsoft 365.

Primary Definitions

  • Public- Viewable, searchable, and editable by anyone with university credentials.
  • Private- Viewable, searchable, and editable by specific university accounts.

Change SharePoint Privacy Settings

Note: Only site members with admin permissions can make changes. The recommended setting is private.

  1. Go to the SharePoint site.
  2. Make sure you’re on the Home page.
  3. In the upper right corner, the site will specify if the group is a Public group or Private groupSharePoint Privacy Settings
  4. To change the Privacy settings, select the gear icon in the top right corner.
  5. Select Site information. SharePoint Site Information Setting
  6. In the Site information section, open the pulldown menu under Privacy settings.
  7. Select Private to ensure only specified members can access the site. SharePoint Privacy Settings Option
