Canvas – Custom Course Creation

OU faculty, staff, and students have the ability to create non-course shells in Canvas, such as for faculty search groups, department committees, course material creation, and student organizations. 

Note: Live, graded course shells will never be manually created. They will be automatically created and populated by the Student Information System (SIS.)

CREATING A CUSTOM COURSE

1. Go to the Dashboard by clicking the icon on the Global Navigation Bar. The Dashboard is also the first page you see when you log in.                                        
2. On the right hand side of the screen, click the Start a New Course button. You may need to scroll down to see this button.  
3. Add your course name by typing in the Course Name field. If your course name is longer than 21 characters, you can create a course code in the Short Name field in the Course Settings after custom course creation. Please name the course something easily identifiable, like DEV_YOURNAME_COURSE for development/sandbox courses or CLUB NAME for student organizations.
4. Click the Create course button.                                                                                                       
5. View the new course.
