Digital Accessibility for LMS Content

Accessibility Targets 

The University of Oklahoma aims to attain a minimum course accessibility score of 70% for published Canvas courses by the beginning of Fall 2026, with a planned annual increase of 5% thereafter. 

Why This Matters 

The University of Oklahoma is committed to meeting new ADA Title II guidelines. Ensuring digital accessibility enhances the student learning experience, reduces barriers, and supports access for all learners. Accessible course design improves usability, clarity, and student success across the entire university community. A few examples include: 

  • Well-structured documents (with headings) are easier for everyone to navigate. 

  • Proper use of color and font size ensures everyone can see the content, regardless of screen or device quality. 

  • Captioned videos help students in noisy environments and are a valuable study tool for all. 

Faculty Obligations and Annual Goals 

To fulfill federal guidelines and support the university’s accessibility objectives, OU faculty are responsible for ensuring their Canvas courses meet the accessibility score targets set for each academic year. This phased approach underscores each instructor’s essential role in creating accessible learning environments for all students. 

  • Fall 2026: 70% minimum accessibility score per course 

    • Fall 2026, Spring 2027, Summer 2027 

  • Fall 2027: 75% minimum accessibility score per course 

    • Fall 2027, Spring 2028, Summer 2028 

  • Fall 2028: 80% minimum accessibility score per course 

    • Fall 2028, Spring 2029, Summer 2029 

  • Fall 2029: 85% minimum accessibility score per course 

    • Fall 2029, Spring 2030, Summer 2030 

Fall 2030: Targets will be reviewed and updated based on campus progress and Title II requirements 

These targets apply to all instructional materials, including documents, images, videos, and assessments used in Canvas courses. 

How to Meet These Requirements 

There are multiple things you can do. First, OU uses YuJa Panorama within Canvas to help instructors see your current course accessibility score(s), identify issues, and remediate them. Second, you can utilize the Accessibility Assistant in Microsoft 365 products to ensure your documents are accessible.  

YuJa Panorama provides: 

  • An overall course accessibility score 

  • File-level accessibility scores and guidance for remediation 

  • Automatically generated alternative formats for students 

  • Suggestions for fixing inaccessible documents, images, and videos 

Using YuJa Panorama in Canvas 

To access Panorama tools: 

  1. Open your Canvas course. 

  1. To view overall course score, prioritize fixes, or see course settings, use the course dashboard (Panorama link in navigation).Panorama link indicated in Canvas navigation and Panorama Dashboard

  2. To view an item report and remediate individually, look for the YuJa Panorama accessibility indicators next to each file or item.   3. To learn about scoring models, you can consult Understanding Panorama's Scoring Models on the YuJa Help Center website. OU is utilizing the Dynamic Severity Model, which is the most commonly used. 

Support and Resources 

The Accessibility Compliance Taskforce provides ongoing support to faculty, including training, guides, and hands-on remediation assistance.
