Assigning LinkedIn Learning Content in a Canvas Course

LinkedIn Learning is an online learning platform with courses in leadership, professional development, creative media, and information technology. Its courses are designed for in-depth and just-in-time instruction at various skill levels. LinkedIn Learning's integration with Canvas allows instructors to bring in already published content available in LinkedIn Learning into Canvas as an assignment or as content in a module (by embedding LinkedIn Learning content in a Canvas Page). It is available in all courses in Canvas, and users can add a link to a LinkedIn Learning Video, Course, Learning Path or Collection.

Note: Anyone with a OU Norman or HSC NetID can take advantage of the content hosted in LinkedIn Learning by logging into the platform directly, but it is important to note that only NetID holders will be able to access content posted in Canvas; users with non-NetID accounts in Canvas will not be able to access and view LinkedIn Learning content, as it requires authentication.

Instructors will not be able to see the specific content a student has completed or not completed in the assigned LinkedIn Learning activity. LinkedIn Learning will pass back a grade to the Canvas assignment, which assigns points based on how much of the individual video and/or course the student has viewed.

Adding LinkedIn Learning Content as an Assignment

  1. From the course navigation menu, click on Assignments, then click the + Assignment button to begin creating the Linkedin Learning assignment.

  2. Fill in the Assignment Name in top text box. You can edit this with the name of the Linkedin Learning assignment you select.

  3. Points -  Set the number of points the assignment is worth. If ungraded, enter "0."

  4. Set the Display Grade as field to Points or if ungraded, select Complete/Incomplete.                                                                                                    .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

  5. From the Submission Type drop down menu, select External Tool, and click Find under the External Tool Options.
    • You do not need to check the Load This Tool in A New Window box as LinkedIn Learning will load within the frame of Canvas if you do not want your students to leave your course page.

  1. In the Configure External Tool pop-up box that opens, scroll down the list of available external tools to click on the magnifying glass icon next to LinkedIn Learning for 1.3.

  1. In the Link Resource from External Tool pop-up box that opens, you will be able to use the Search for content bar to search and find the content you wish to bring into Canvas.

  2. Select Add next to one of the items within the list of available materials. Once clicked, press the Confirm button.

  1. In the Configure External Tool pop-up box that opens, press the Select"button.

  2. On the Edit Assignment page, scroll down to the Assign settings and set the due date and availability dates for the assignment.

  3. In the Canvas assignment, click the Save & Publish button at the bottom of the page to create the assignment.

The benefits of adding LinkedIn Learning Content into Canvas as an assignment are to give your students due dates, and/or to make the content visible only to specific people or sections.

Embedding LinkedIn Learning Content in a Page

  1. From the course navigation menu, click Pages, then click the +Pages button.

  2. On the Edit Page page, enter the name for the page, click the App icon in the Rich Content Editor bar then select View All

  3. Select LinkedIn Learning from the menu. On the LinkedIn Learning screen, search for the content you would like to add to the page, then click Add.

  4. Once you've added the content you want, click the blue Confirm button at the bottom of the screen.

  5. The LinkedIn Learning content will populate on the page. Confirm additional settings, then click Save. You can now link to the page in Modules. Note: The LinkedIn Learning content will play by default when users access it.
